Landlord and Tenant Rights

Review your rights as a tenant or landlord – DO NOT sign or pay anything until you know your rights. If you are a renter or a tenant you must become familiar with your rights. There have been many changes in our laws that limit the do’s and don’t’s of renters and tenants. Before you move into your next rental, or before you rent your next rental, learn more information about:

The Residential Tenancies Act (the RTA) began on January 31, 2007. The RTA establishes the rules for practically all residential rental housing located in Ontario. The older and previous legislation, the Tenant Protection Act, (TPA) is now history.

The Landlord and Tenant Board provides information on RTA and you can resolve disputes between a residential landlord and tenant. The Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal is now better-known as the Landlord and Tenant Board.
