Toronto Rent - 4RentGTA helps you find the lowest rental rate
So you are looking for a low Toronto rent rate. Well sometimes that can be easy, depending on where you want to move to in the GTA area.
For some neighbourhoods, you will not find it. For some less desirable neighbourhoods with higher crime rates of course you will find low Toronto rent there. But ask yourself do I need to move to an unsafe area? Would I rather not move to a nicer area and perhaps move there with a friend, and share the expenses? Getting a roommate is one of the best options you can consider if you wish to save money on rent. Of course when you mature and your career takes off, you can change your rental area to better suit your needs.
So you may ask what is involved in looking for a roomate? Let us help you. First,
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SPEND ON TORONTO RENT?
Ask yourself, how much do you want to pay, and are able financially to pay in monthly rent? For a nice, not great downtown Toronto, a 1-bedroom apartment will be between $950 and $1500, period. And folks, even in the suburb areas, a 1-bedroom is maybe $800, in an OK neighbourhood. But at times, rental bargains can be found if you're patient.
So what can you afford. Take your monthly income and divide it by 3. At this point you have 3 options: one) make more $$$$; two) consider the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) where rents are lower; or three) save money on rent by finding a roommate.
So how do I Find a Roommate
Here are some basic tips, and also be sure to check out our Rental Tips Section - Roommates for more info. As we have seen in our lives, there are people you get along OK with but if you lived with them they would drive you nuts. So to filter out non-suitable persons, ask a potential roommate some or all of the following questions. This can test their compatibility with you.
-Ever had a roommate before?
-If yes what bothered you about them, tell me all
-Will your boyfriend/girlfriend or other friend stay frequently?
-Are you promiscuous?
-Do you smoke?
-Do you drink? Do drugs? If yes, how often?
-Do you party late?
-Any credit problems?
-Any pets or will you buy any in the future?
-And your occupation is?
-Tell me what do you watch on TV, listen to? Do you listen loud?
-Do you clean, cook?
-Do you drink from a container?
-Do you clean toilets?
-Do you have referrals?
Remember, whatever you ask, you have to feel safe and very comfortable with this future roommate. Lets face it nowadays, you are taking a chance sharing a home.
One last note, ensure the roommate co-signs on the lease. If you are the only name on the lease, then you will legally have the burden for all responsibility for the rental apartment. So take your time, let your gut instinct tell you if a person feels right or not, and take your time finding a good roommate, it will save you alot of Toronto rent for other things in life.
